On this day, 414 years ago: Galileo Galilei wrote his first letter describing his observations of the Moon
through a telescope.
Galileo was not the only observer of the Moon and certainly not the first, but his studies showed that the Moon was anything but a perfect sphere (as had been previously believed), with areas of light and shadow on a rough and uneven surface. From these and other observations Galileo concluded that the Moon's surface was very much like that of the Earth, with mountains, plains and valleys.

His detailed descriptions were also published in a book called Sidereus Nuncius.
